In almost all sorts of chemical industries, water is used in the product itself or in the production process. The chemical industry is an overall group including the production of basic chemicals, pesticides and agrochemical products, paint and lacquer, soap, cleansing and cleaning agents, perfumes, hair shampoo, and pharmaceutical raw materials and remedies. In most cases, quality of water from waterworks is insufficient because the content of inorganic salts disrupts or spoils the products and processes. Both softened and demineralized water is frequently used in many chemical fluids which ensures a steady composition and look of products. At the same time, precipitations are avoided – even by larger thermal influences.

Within the pharmaceutical industry, water is commonly used in liquid form, not only as an ingredient in many formulations but also as a cleaning agent. Production of purified water, highly purified water, pyrogen-free water and WFI to international pharmaceutical standards is widely recognized as a critical process. Municipal water is insufficient because the water contains salts, organic matter, particles, and microorganisms that pollute or even destroy products and processes. Process water for pharmaceutical industry must be of high quality and at the same time meet regulatory requirements of pharmacopoeia governing water treatment equipment in question. Softened and demineralized water is used in many processes to ensure uniform water quality of the end product and to facilitate the final validation.
Salts, particles, organic matter, humus, and microorganisms are removed through membrane filtration. As an extra precaution against microorganisms, UV disinfection units and sterile filters can be installed.
